Film copyright renewals[edit]

Hi, I have noticed that you have searched copyright renewals. Could you please help finding film copyright renewals? Here is a list, based on publicdomainmovies YT channel. Thanks, Yann (talk) 14:56, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I can look into these. I know that Charade is fine since it had an improper notice. My guess for the British films is they would be considered under URAA as restored notices if they lacked original notices, but I would need to check. I'll take a look at this later when I have some time. Thank you for asking! --SDudley (talk) 15:29, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Took a quick look and Things to Come did have a proper restoration notice here. Just have to ctrl+f.
And the same thing for The Tunnel here. SDudley (talk) 15:33, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! One more: The Manster (1959) Yann (talk) 16:20, 9 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Salt of the Earth would have had its renewal due by 1982. And the last of the physical book catalogs was 1978, so I had to rely on the Copyright Office's Public Catalog (which is very clunky). I did not find a renewal.
I also could not find a renewal for The Little Shop of Horrors, but that doesn't matter since the film is missing a physical copyright notice anyway.
For The Manster I couldn't find a renewal, but be wary since there was a new 1986 registration under PA0000327500. This registration doesn't restore copyright to the film, but it claims to have made new edits. And those new materials are covered by copyright, so before uploading the film make sure it is not sourced from the 1986 version. There is a similar occurrence with the 1929 film The Taming of the Shrew.
And A Boy and His Dog is interesting since it is a derivative work of a 1969 novella which is part of a larger short story collection. Now the story first appeared in a British magazine, which we can see had a copyright notice. And due to how renewals for 1964 and after are automatic it is under copyright. As for the novella and the larger collection I found it under RE0000768346, which was not needed since it was from 1969 but it confirms the registration in the first place. All that said, I can't find a renewal for the 1975 film, but we wouldn't be able to upload it as a derivative of a still copyrighted work.
And my final disclaimer is that I am not a legal professional, and this is just what I could find. SDudley (talk) 19:13, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

help with vector[edit]

Hi! I moved my answer here, because I don't know if you see it if I just reply:

Hi! First, congrats for the try, it's already pretty okay. I hope You used Inkscape for the conversion. Besides the fact the app is cross-platform (Linux/Windows) and free, it's easy to learn how to use it (lots of tutorials online). IF You used Inkscape I think You made only one mistake: when exporting the finished image, make sure you export only the image and NOT white areas of the workspace (indicated with rectangle borders, looking like a paper page). You click File>Document Propreties>Resize page to content (in the right window that show up). If I remember right, here You have to click two times. But, I'd delete the two black bars first.
With Inkscape it's a piece of cake to convert BUT: You first prepare the raster image (jpeg, in this case) with another picture editor of choice (You can use anithing from Windows Paint, Gimp, Paint.NET to online editors). Usually I start by first correcting the original a little bit (on desktop, erasing parts I don't need), and then redeucing the colors to less shades of gray (16 or 8 colors) because than it's easier for Inkscape to process it. But, in Your case, You can delete the two black bars right in Inkscape - basic editing: you draw a square around them, thus marking the part and just hit the erase button. Make sure the image is in "Ungrouped" mode, because if isn't, it treats the image as a whole and will not let you pick separate parts. All You need is to wipe out the excess. If you need coloring of a sort (though I always prefer black and white, because of it's smilarity to ink) You can additionally play with colors inside the program. The cool part is: Inkscape already treats white background as transparent when You save it as vector (with raster it's lot more complicated, and in case of jpeg not even possible). The Bad part of that: You need to define white parts separately - I simply drop white paint into those areas, and bingo. For a more purist, clean look, You must enlarge your image and tweak it a bit by manually moving lines (another benefit of vector editing). Time consuming 'though. And Vector also have it's limits. I still did not figured out how to trace "center-lines" in a simple line-drawn image, it forces what it calls "strokes" and "shapes". Anyway, as with any computer stuff, it's a learning process. If You need more help, i'm here.
P.S. I didn't know if Your intention was to convert the drawing only, or the letters too. You CAN do the letters also with Inkscape (the Path>Trace Bitmap command). But the Universal logo is too complicated, I'd leave it out.
I added the source image in the description, for Your convenience - it's proper for reference. You probably know: any corrected versions you just upload again to the same page, as many times as it's needed. If You find it hard to fix the vector (or do the letters) just write, I can do it for You, no problem.--Jozefsu (talk) 07:44, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! This is really helpful. I'll ping you back once I have the time to try these steps out. SDudley (talk) 14:49, 28 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I corrected Your picture with Inkscape, it took relaxed 15 minutes - it's Sunday afternoon, anyway :) It's now centered, transparent (only black and white is present) and I fixed some tiny edge uneveness, but not too much because the original was very good! But I also made a mistake - it ended up too big on display - so I reuploaded again a resized version (see File history) - it doesn't affect the vector image, just for aestetic reasons here at Wiki. If You don't like it, just simply overwrite with another version of the pic. It is still Your original creation, but this demonstrates how easily Vector is played with and it looks perfect in any size :) --Jozefsu (talk) 15:09, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I hadn't had the time to devote to this yet, so I appreciate the fix. I'll try and make another vector and ping you once it is done. SDudley (talk) 16:24, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Quick question[edit]

Hi, can we upload to Commons Felix the Cat's shorts from British Pathé's youtube channel if Felix the Cat filmography article says that those shorts went in the public domain? I guess there can be some problems with their watermark but idk. Kazachstanski nygus (talk) 18:21, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Any shorts for that series that were produced and released by the end of 1928 are in the public domain in the United States, so they should be able to be uploaded. I'm also not certain about the watermark. Just be sure to check if the shorts were produced with sound or not for the 1927-1928 period, because if not then any sound attached will have to be removed.
