Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you.

- Yes, but my bot can't read and just saying that the image is the same as xxx won't put the license in the image's page. Remember the next time. Bye, --FilnikRock! 15:01, 29 January 2008 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Alfred.Grandidier00.jpg[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Alfred.Grandidier00.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. — Manecke 18:06, 3 February 2008 (UTC)

Categories[edit]
Hello, I see you allocating hundreds of not existing categories. Please stop that immediately! If you keep on I must assume you're vandalizing and will alarm admins. -- Ies 21:03, 16 February 2008 (UTC)
Hello again, here I'm listing only few images of many many more you miscategorised.

Category:Otter Trail doesn’t exist.
-
Category:Burkea africana doesn’t exist.
-
Category:Pelargonium peltatum doesn’t exist.
There is also a good amount of images you left uncategorized or didn't place in a gallery. For instance:
As the categories, if allocated, however appear reasonable you probably didn't understand the category system. Please read Commons:Categories. There is only one exception not explained and therefore frequently made wrong: put images of plant species like Burkea africana and Pelargonium peltatum in galleries, NOT in categories, please. Let me know if you need any assistance! -- Ies 06:31, 17 February 2008 (UTC)
- I also have been going through the photos and connecting them to a higher level Category or placing in Galleries. You are right there is a lack of Wiki based communication when it asks uploaders to add Categories, there needs to be something more to tell people to make the full connection to existing Categories and not assume the obvious of just naming a Cat and thinking it is finished, WayneRay 22:18, 17 February 2008 (UTC)WayneRay
- Well, there is one obvious indicator wheather or not a category (or any other) link works. If the link is Blue it does works. If the link is Red it does NOT work. -- Ies 15:17, 18 February 2008 (UTC)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

- Yes, I know - the standardized messages like above don't always match up with what actually happens here. I simply marked it as a copyright violation, to allow some other admin to make a final decision (second opinion, as it were) whether that was true, which is what User:Cirt did. In this case it happened fairly quickly, other times it takes a while; it all depends on when people choose to check the work queue. The above message should perhaps mention Commons:Undeletion requests for cases when the image has already been deleted.
- Anyways, regarding these images, there were two things to be aware of. One, PD-US applies to works published before 1923, not in 1923. Second, Commons policy (COM:L) is that works should be public domain in both the US and in their source country; this was a British work, and the artist died less that 70 years ago, so it's not PD in Britain. (For what it's worth, if it were PD in the US and not in Britain, you'd have the option of uploading it to the English Wikipedia, where policy is different.) --dave pape (talk) 14:59, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

(pasted from User talk:CarolSpears)
Please do not remove legitimate warnings from your talk page or replace them with inappropriate content. Removing or maliciously altering warnings from your talk page will not remove them from the page history. You're welcome to archive your talk page, but be sure to provide a link to any deleted legitimate comments. You can archive your talk page automatically with MiszaBot. If you continue to remove or vandalize legitimate warnings from your talk page, you will lose your privilege of editing your talk page. Thanks. abf /talk to me/ 18:50, 26 November 2008 (UTC)

- This is an interesting situation. User:ABF is an administrator who answers questions. The warning is (I guess) to not ask another administrator questions unless I am certain she can answer them or perhaps those who are thinking that the complaint is valid could put in their own words what the complaint is here and what makes it valid. -- carol (talk) 17:54, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Update: in the past User:ABF answered questions. User_talk:ABF#accountability sits there now though.... -- carol (talk) 18:22, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi. While users are given fairly wide latitude with respect to their userspace, it is in fact a community page and is absolutely not owned by the user. As such, the community does have the final say on what is appropriate use. In particular, the Commons community believes that removing valid warnings is not an acceptable practice in most cases. Thanks — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 17:10, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- Doesn't sound like wide latitude at all!! - Is this your personal interpretation or is it backed up by some directive to which you can refer me? Rotational (talk) 17:41, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, I don't understand how disallowing certain behaviours is a problem. For example, we do not allow promotional content in the userspace, nor vandalism, nor personal attacks etc etc. It's normally not appropriate to summarily remove others' comments from talk pages - that is basic courtesy. There are exceptions to this of course - there would be no problem removing vandalistic edits or blatant attacks, for example.
- I have a Commons user talk page, you know. — Mike.lifeguard | talk 18:32, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm sure - but your signature above had a WikiBooks link. ABF's comment above had nothing to do with "promotional content in the userspace", "nor personal attacks", but rather was a fairly naked threat "If you continue to remove or vandalize legitimate warnings from your talk page, you will lose your privilege of editing your talk page" Removing a warning from your own talk page cannot remotely be construed as vandalism. Incidentally, why are you conducting this dialogue on ABF's behalf? Rotational (talk) 09:09, 30 November 2008 (UTC)
- I'm watching your talk page; you needn't reply on mine nor on any other wiki. Thanks — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:36, 27 November 2008 (UTC)
- As I said on Carol's talk page, once you've read a warning you're free to leave, archive or delete it as you wish. If a particular administrator doesn't like that, that's their problem. Richard001 (talk) 06:53, 1 December 2008 (UTC)
I notice you uploaded this image. Please add it to as many relevant categories as you can. In this case an obvious omission is the species in the picture. Thanks. Richard001 (talk) 06:54, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:19, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Ludolf Backhuysen[edit]
Hi Rotational, I saw your edits on the images of Ludolf Backhuysen. My question: why are you changing the category, since it is correct. The spelling Back/bak is just old Dutch versus new Dutch, in fact Bakhuizen would be the correct present name. The painting are in the Rijksmuseum, so I reverted your edits. File:Epiphyllum anguliger00.jpg[edit]
Hi Rotational.
After my opinion this picture does not show a stem of Epiphyllum anguliger but one of Selenicereus anthonyanus (syn. Cryptocereus anthonyanus). Epiphyllum anguliger stems usually have a middle "rib" visible so that the side lobes look more like leaves (to laymen ;-). S. anthonyanus often has lobes as thick as the middle "rib", just like in your picture; but this middle rib may also be thicker at cases. Also, E. anguliger rarely have long arial roots growing from the stem. S. anthonyanus, on the other hand, grows arial roots as a regular habit as it usally uses them to climb on the stems of a host plant. Other than E. anguliger, whose stems rather hang over when growing longer, S. anthonyanus is a climbing epiphyte. You will know for sure once your plant flowers. The flowers of E. anguliger are white or yellowish (ivory); while those of S. anthonyanus have pink to red outer petals while the inner petals are also white. See images on Google search.
I suggest that you move your pic to an appropriate name and fix the description accordingly. Thank you.

Copyright status: File:Franz Bergman01.jpg[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Franz Bergman01.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Your account will be renamed[edit]
Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Rotational. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Rotational~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell

Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
