Why did you delete my abuse filter report?

Without any comment? Once more: The filter hindered my deleting a spam link from File:Bolivian vizcacha.jpg (click the source link to find out!) First, I try to help to clean wikimedia. Then a filter runs wild. Then I try to help once more to report this error. Then you come along and delete my report without any comment. Hi Yann. IP 112.206.107.90 is back doing the same stuff that led to them being blocked per COM:AN#Commons:Deletion requests/File:Flag of the Torres Strait Islanders.svg. I don't think the IP is going to be stopped by any further warnings or short blocks. The above user has now been blocked for excessive and dubious tagging of images for speedy deletion, including File:Flag of Lusaka.gif, which I specifically contested. This image had a valid licence attached, and at the very least it should have been subject to a standard deletion discussion. Yes, I blocked this user for creating speedy deletions, even after he was warned not to do so. However most of the files he tagged are probably copyright violations. Par example, there is no free license for File:Flag of Lusaka.gif, and such a complex rendering certainly creates a copyright. If some Commons users recreate the flags, they would be OK, but copying the files from another website is not. Yann (talk) 20:55, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Wrong license

Hi Yann, license changes like this one are not appropriate. Firstly, {{PD-Webb}} refers to a copyright statement that applies exclusively for images published at https://webbtelescope.org/ but you will find this image nowhere on that site. Next, you are arguing in your edit summary that “[t]here is no doubt that the image comes from NASA”. This is not the exclusive work by NASA. The credit line names Judy Schmidt who is neither an employee of NASA, CSA or ESA but a volunteer who creates images from raw data in her free time, see here for more info about her. False claim of Sockpuppets

Dear Yann, I read this message about sockpuppets by user eien20. However, those other accounts are not mine. So it is wrong to falsely claim otherwise. I only use Artanisen on Wikipedia. may i ask why you removed this file: Former flag of Wajir County.gif? was there a takedown request? the flag is of a government body and the use of it on this site is clearly educational. many places/public bodies are quite happy to receive attention via their flags. in fact, that interest is driving flag adoption in many cases. @Shorepine: Works from government bodies are not automatically in the public domain. It depends on the body and country of origin. In addition, the original design may be in the public domain, but not the rendering. File:Former flag of Wajir County.gif is a complex design, it is copied from another website, so it is certainly under a copyright. Please note that SVG should be used rather than GIF. the existence of a copyright means the owner retains the right to prohibit certain uses; it doesn't imply that they can be assumed to have the interest or desire to prohibit any use of their ip by others. that would be silly. musicians are quite happy to have their music played on the radio, at weddings, even political rallies. when they are not happy with certain uses, they issue a cease and desist order. there is no presumption that any use by others is prohibited. they retain the right to determine what uses are permitted and which are not - subject to certain legal restraints on even that right, depending on municipal law. so why assume government entities are interested in prohibiting the reproduction of their images for educational purposes? or that they even can, legally? @Shorepine: Copyright doesn't work like that. Radios have to pay royalties to musicians to play their music. Other uses may be fair use, but that's not allowed on Commons. On Commons, we need a free license, allowing any use for any purpose, including commercial ones. Bien entendu, cette photo n’a pas été volée, mais réalisée avec son accord lors de l’exposition des ses photos au cours d’une séance de pose à l’issue de laquelle Mme Huguier a approuvé la photo.

Je l’ai donc invitée à contacter OTRS (permissions-commons-fr@wikimedia.org) afin de formuler une demande motivée, ce qu’elle a fait.

Blocked as Iranian / Muslim

I really can't see this as a good block.

This is an international project. We have enough difficulty explaining the bulk porn hosting policy to many people in Europe, let alone the US Bible Belt. To have an Iranian IP CfD a couple of the porn categories is not vandalism. They're wrong (a CfD is not appropriate here, on any level), they're out of consensus on the broad porn-hosting question (good luck changing that one!), but this is not vandalism. We have to recognise valid cultural differences and not just shout it down as "vandalism", let alone blocking the account. Why would there ever be any need to do this after just a single action like this? Maybe they are a vandal, maybe they are just trolling (it happens), but we can't (per AGF) act on that basis, from a single event like this.

Maybe French WP outreach projects are different, but I have to work in the UK and this really doesn't help perceptions of Islamophobic bias in WMF, or giving me yet another "anti-Islamic action by the same old Western media" I have to try and explain or make excuses for. Whatever is the source country, we don't want people not knowing our policies to create frivolous DRs. We can't have different blocking policies for different people. If we would start this slippery slope, we would go to disaster. Anyway IPs will soon be hidden, so it will be moot quite soon. May be we need another blocking criteria, but whatever you want to call this, this is an appropriate block. And if it were an account, some warnings before a block may be useful, but it doesn't work for IPs. Actually, we should disallow IPs creating DRs, and many other edits. I originally got the image from http://www.cppcc.gov.cn/zxww/2023/03/11/ARTI1678473252987660.shtml and I assume that the copyright is owned by the CCP. I do understand that if it needs to be deleted, but I do think it would be a shame, since the other image used was from the 1940s and this Tibetan has been ruling Tibet since the Chinese invasion of Tibet, whilst this is a modern version. Le fichier File:Blason de la famille de Perier.svg  fait l'objet d'une décatégorisation par AncestryP (qui a créé Category:Famille de Perier de Salvert) et Comch (tout comme BBC440). A noter, cette intervention douteuse de ‎Cvx14 autour de la même thématique.
Je suppose que la RCU de l'année passée doit être trop ancienne pour des traces. Quelles sont les options possibles, sinon les annulations ?

@Yann. I asked a question (and pinged) on June 1st to you from my talk page, but no response yet. Here: User talk:Ooligan#Please give images better names you brought "attention to a common error?" As I said in my reply to you, I have started renaming past files with better names. I have many more to go, but I will try to rename all my uploads in the next two months. There are some Users that have uploaded 100's or 1,000's of files for years with this same "common error" and afterwards, no effort to rename their files.

Have you also contacted other current Flickr uploaders about this "common error?"

En tant qu'utilisateur non-administrateur, je dispose seulement de quelques indices qui me permettent de supposer que quelqu'un avait peut-être enlevé la licence vers le 16 mai 2020 et que j'avais peut-être révoqué cette modification le 17 mai 2020 et que finalement le fichier a été supprimé le 31 mai 2020 pour cause «d'absence de licence depuis le 19 mai 2020». Je souhaiterais simplement vérifier 1) si le fichier n'avait effectivement pas de licence et 2) s'agissait-il de ce fichier de flickr : [2] ? Se pourrait-il que le fichier ait été supprimé seulement parce qu'il a une «public domain mark» apposée par l'auteur ? On sait que cela ne se fait plus depuis l'été 2020, peu après la suppression de ce fichier. Accessoirement, les administrateurs disposent-ils d'un outil de recherche qui peut rechercher dans les pages des fichiers supprimés, par exemple pour rechercher si des pages supprimées contenaient l'expression «gvilleneuve28» ou «120224247@N08» pour savoir s'il y a d'autres fichiers supprimés qui provenaient du même compte flickr ? Nominations like special:diff/774946847 are truly problematic. It had a source, it was used in a work at English Wikisource, and it was deleted for not having a licence. Deliberate attack on honest work

Hello,

I am certain it’s a mistake, in no way did I violate any copyrights, my work is based on older files but it included corrections of ahistorical toponymy and minor placement mistakes. I genuinely appreciate your effort, but I truly am trying to do good work, some maps presented are low quality, hastily thrown together with little attention to accuracy in accordance with period maps depicting the area. If there is a better way to do it please do let me know, I’m not so good with technology, my students helped me to edit, I hope it can all better resolved, and that you can help me. Undeletion edit summaries etc

I noticed that File:HMS Llandaff, 1969 (IWM).jpg has been undeleted, presumably because Crown Copyright has now expired, which is great, and I have no problem with the undeletion of the photo, but I noticed that when you removed the deletion discussion tag from the (undeleted?) file, that you used the edit summary "(Kept per Commons:Deletion requests/File:HMS Llandaff, 1969 (IWM).jpg)" which is misleading because it points to a discussion where the conclusion was to delete, and there isn't any explanation of why it was undeleted. Would it be possible to be a bit clearer in the edit summary or somewhere in the page history on on the talk page about the reasons for undeletion? Nigel Ish (talk) 09:37, 14 July 2023 (UTC)

Question about your proposal

Hi. Do you happen to know what the status of your Proposal to allow old orphan works is? I was thinking about requesting it be closed since I have old photographs I'd like to upload and there seems to be a consensus to approve it. Plus it's been open for quit awhile without further comments. I don't want to do either one if I'm just reading it wrong and it really failed or something though. Thanks. @ Yann vraiment incroyable de lire un tel commentaire ! Je n'ai JAMAIS utilisé l'unique argument qu'il s'agit d'une "vue aérienne" puisque vous semblez ne pas comprendre l'anglais, je vais donc traduire :

• "unsimilar to the other pitctures of this user take in the ground" [FR : différent des autres images prisent au sol par l'utilisateur en question] (sous entendu les images prises au sol dont de qualité correcte et en haute définition alors que les images aériennes sont de très faible définition et souvent pixélisées).
• "poor quality from Google image" [FR : qualité médiocre issu de Google image] (rejoint l'argument ci-dessus)
• "printed image take by smartphone (see the color point composed the picture)" [FR : image imprimée prise avec smartphone (regardez les points de couleur qui composent l'image)] on a en plus des exif des photo de smartphone, vous avez déjà vu un téléphone voler ? Et ne me sortez pas l'augment de l'aéronef, il s'agit de photo ultra zoomées et prise parfaitement à la verticale, de plus on voit clairement qu'il s'agit d'une photo imprimé avec les point d'impression.
• "ILEGAL to broadcast aerial footage of an activ jail !" (FR : il est illégale de diffusé une vue aérienne d'une prison active ! Et oui, Google maps et le Géoportail n'on pas le droit de diffuser de vue aérienne des prisons mais visiblement vous êtes ok pour diffuser cela sur Commons et Wikipédia, aucun problème !

Ces photos n'ont aucun liens esthétiques et techniques entres elles. C'est symptomatique du copyvio, on vole des images fantômes de base qualité sur Google image et on reprend avec son téléphone des vues aériennes anciennes affichées en mairie où dans un quelconque lieu publique, vous n'avez aucune perspicacité pour détecter ça ?

Enfin et pour couronner le tout, toutes ces images sont en lien avec Vesoul et ont été mises en ligne par de multiples compte éphémères ! Et pourquoi ? Parce qu'ils ont tous été bloqués sur Wikipédia. Tous ces comptes sont les faux-nez d'un même individu qui a été banni pour ses nombreux copyvio, des copier-coller textuels d'internet sont modifier une seule virgule ! Et AUSSI des photos !

Something I meant to ask you earlier...

Why exactly is it disruptive to "solicit proxy edits on one's behalf on [another project which I won't name] through Commons" (as Surjection wrote here)? See, the proxy-edit-soliciting was done simply so that I would feel less of an urge to block-evade.
So why would he (Surjection) find that part disruptive, especially when I never asked him to make those proxy edits? I'd ask Surjection but he and Fish bowl seem to think everything I ask them is "pestering", even when I don't mean it that way. Shāntián Tàiláng (talk) 20:18, 1 August 2023 (UTC)

Import d'une photo de statue

Bonjour, comme vous êtes le seul administrateur francophone dont je me souviens sur Commons, je m'adresse à vous. Tout à l'heure j'aurais souhaité importer la photo d'une statue de François Rabelais, apparemment créée par Henri Dumaigne en 1880, et qui se trouve sur la voie publique. Mais je me suis souvenue aussi qu'il n'y avait pas de liberté de panorama en France, et je ne connais pas bien la législation sur ces questions. Aurais-je le droit d'importer la photo ? J'ai aussi importé une photo sur laquelle on voit des bâtiments, est-ce autorisé ? (Je suppose que peut-être seuls les bâtiments architecturaux se démarquant par l'empreinte de leur auteur sont soumis à une interdiction de reproduction...) Category:Rail vehicles

Dans l'en-tête de cette catégorie, un texte encadré rappelle qu'il s'agit d'une catégorie-mère et que les images doivent de préférence être placées dans une sous-catégorie la plus appropriée possible. J'ai entrepris depuis plusieurs semaines de faire ce travail de recatégorisation. Après ce nettoyage, je me demande comment faire pour enlever, après la liste des sous-catégories, dans une section intitulée Pages dans la catégorie « Rail vehicles », le modèle « Template:Rolling Stock-Information ». Je ne comprends pas à quoi sert ce modèle à cet emplacement ; en effet, quand un utilisateur veut déposer un fichier, je ne pense pas qu'il va consulter cette catégorie pour remplir les différents champs du formulaire d'import mais qu'il va aller sur « Importer un fichier ». Template:PD-Coa-Germany

Hi @Yann

I have a request regarding license templates for German public organizations. There is already the "PD-Coa-Germany". It refers to the "Corporation of public law" (German: "Körperschaft des öffentlichen Rechts") - For example: "Deutschlandradio", "Medizinischer Dienst der Krankenversicherung" or "Industrie- und Handelskammer".

But there is another very similar form of public organization in Germany: The "Institution of public law" (German: "Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts") - For example: "Versorgungsanstalt des Bundes und der Länder", "Technisches Hilfswerk" or "Deutsche Nationalbibliothek".

The only differences are, that the Corporation of public law has members and the Institution of public law has users. Legally, both are basically very similar because both serve a public purpose. I could therefore imagine that it would make sense if there were also a related template for the Institutions of public law (German: Anstalt des öffentlichen Rechts) What do you think? Year categories for stamps of Algeria

Just a little tip apropos of your nomination of File:Joseph Siffrein Duplessis - Benjamin Franklin - Google Art Project.jpg: When a picture is already a Featured Picture on some Wikipedia edition (and therefore already includes the {{Assessments}} template), and then becomes a FP on Commons, too, our FPCBot always forgets to add the necessary featured=1 parameter to the {{Assessments}} template, we must do that manually. I have resolved it ([5]), but I may not find all cases of this problem. Therefore I wanted you to know about the problem – maybe you want to check your own next FP nominations for this problem after the FP promotion.

They don't. But this allows others to check deletion requests of their files. If the talk page is protected, creating a DR by a non-admin will probably ends in an error. I didn't test that though. Yann (talk) 17:47, 25 August 2023 (UTC)

If @Jfruh: and I both request it, will you unprotect the map? From past experience, trying to get admins to update a map that changes on a weekly timescale is a fruitless task. Usually what happens is people end up creating a duplicate map and start using that, which just multiplies the number of useless files on Commons.

In this case, Jfruh reverted it with a valid reference, which I accepted, but then re-reverted when I found a more up-to-date reference. The map should reflect the current situation, so I think we'd both agree that whichever version is supported by the most recent news reports is the one we should use. How did you "review" it? Per Commons:Village pump/Copyright/Archive/2020/12#Template:BollywoodHungama, the problem isn't that the files are shown as licensed on the source site, but that the source site is untrustworthy for making such claims. This makes it near-impossible to "review" them past this.

Deletion of images affecting my account

As of recent many of photographs I’ve uploaded to the site on here have been prompted for deletion due to “copyright” issues, my question is. I provided proper sources and even links to many of the photos, what makes them copyright infringement? It is very frustrating as I’ve been a massive contributor to many Wikipedia pages improving them not only information but photos, and to have a situation like this happen is very disheartening. As a lot of the photographs which have already been deleted took time to upload to the site, and for me to be able to look proper sources. What can I even do at this point just let it happen? Because it is very disappointing for my page to be swarmed with violations for no apparent reason to my knowledge, unless it had something to do specifics with how I categorized the copyright. So please let me know if I can do something at this point as you’re the person who decided to start mass deletion on many of my photos and to almost get my account removed.
