As one of the individuals captured in this photo, I did not consent to its release online. [[Special:Contributions/North6318 (talk) 00:09, 14 May 2024 (UTC)|North6318 (talk) 00:09, 14 May 2024 (UTC)]] 01:55, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • First, {{Flickrreview}} confirmed that this image was properly licensed, almost 9 years ago.

Note: The Canadian film centre released over 6,000 photos taken at its events, during the early 21st century. This image, like the other 6,000 images, was taken at an event organized by the CFC. The individuals invited to these events knew that designated photographers were circulating at these events. I suggest that agreeing to pose for a photo taken by one of the CFC's photographers indicated the invitee's consent for the CFC to do whatever it wanted with the photos, including releasing it under a license that allowed the WMF to make use of it for educational purposes.

  • Second, User:North6318 (talk) 00:09, 14 May 2024 (UTC), the WMF commons, and other WMF projects, do make provisions for people to request the deletion of properly licensed images. We do so as a courtesy. Its discretionary. If you consider your request to be serious, please:[reply]
  1. Send an email to the committee of trusted volunteers who confidentially confirm the real world identities of outsiders like yourself. We should never delete material based on an anonymous request. permissions-commons@wikimedia.org
  2. I recommend you offer a meaningful explanation for this image's deletion. This image has been viewed 2000 times, since it was uploaded here. This represents considerable effort on the part of the projects volunteers. Your explanation for your deletion request should be significant enough to justify ignoring the efforts volunteers made in the uploading and curation of this image.

If the real reason for your deletion request is, well, no offense, simple vanity, your request is most likely to win approval if you honestly own up to this.

You could upload a superior image. Go to the Barber or hair-dresser, take a selfie of yourself that you think is superior to this image. Upload it, using what we consider a "free" license.

  3. User:North6318 (talk) 00:09, 14 May 2024 (UTC), at this point some people who are making a request for courtesy deletion get anxious, feel confused, because they want to know what they should do to make sure they can guarantee the image that triggered their concern gets deleted.[reply]

There is no guarantee. You are requesting this properly licensed image's deletion as a courtesy - a favor. The success of your request rests on the strength of your request. Everyone here is supposed to be courteous. We are supposed to be courteous to you. And this courtesy rule applies to you too. So, make sure you remain courteous during this discussion.

Note: if you upload an additional image, that selfie I recommended above, any WMF member who writes about you, and wants to use an image of you, will choose the best image of you. So, if your selfie is a good image, you can trust that that is the one that will be used. Geo Swan (talk) 09:01, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  4. What if the reason you want the image deleted ISN'T vanity? Over the years I have thought about the other reasons someone might prefer we delete an image of themselves. Alternative reason have included...
    1. Since this image was taken I observed a serious crime, and I am now in an official witness protection program, and I request a courtesy deletion to help protect my safety...
    2. Since this image was taken I have undergone a religious conversion. I am now a member of a church that believes cameras capture an individual's soul, and I request courtesy deletion so I can comply with my church's doctrine...
    3. Since this image was taken I have developed a serious case of body dismorphia. Images of my own body make me ill, and my therapist has written a letter, to you, and everyone else who has an image of me, requesting you delete it to help protect my mental health...
If an individual finds the reason for their request for courtesy deletion embarrassing, should they confine the explanation to their letter to the confidential committee?
It is an option, but I don't think it is a good idea. The committee member could come here, and state the nominator shared a confidential reason for their request. But the decision as to whether to keep or delete lies with the people participating here, not with the committee member. I think that, if the nominator is serious, they would be best served by voicing their true reason here. Geo Swan (talk) 09:32, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Geo Swan Something to note is that the image shows several people. If one of them has a good reason to request the image to be deleted (do we have an official list of reasons? Second one cited above does not sound serious to me, unlike the two others - but the first one should require some proof, like the third one states...), then it should not affect the others; the main image should be replaced with one that blurrs/blanks the face of that one person, and the extracted image of theirs could be deleted. I can think, however, of no good reason for the deletion of multiple extracted faces. Yet see for example File:Aylwin Lo, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503) (cropped).jpg and File:Pearl Chen, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503).jpg; the IP seems to be claiming to be each and every single person in the photo... this cannot be correct. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 09:53, 13 May 2024 (UTC) PS. I see this was explained later, feel free to ignore the second part of my message. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 09:56, 13 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Piotrus, WRT the reasons to request courtesy deletion... Fifteen or sixteen years ago I participated in a DR where the justification of the individual requesting courtesy deletion was that she was young, inexperienced, and did not understand all the implications of a CC license. She had gone on a field trip, with fellow students, to Pond Inlet, one of the half dozen smallest, most isolated and most northerly communities in Canada. It is on the North Coast of Baffin Island. She had a great camera, and was a talented photographer, and had taken six dozen or so truly amazing photos. After I uploaded those photos from flickr she had a kind of moral panic, as her six dozen photos included a dozen or so images of Inuit children. These happy energetic children seemed very excited to have visitors to their community. Her moral panic was mainly over having uploaded these images of happy children. I don't know if she would still have felt this panic if the children's parents had explicitly given permision. In fact, she requested all six dozen photos be deleted. The DR decided to only delete those images that showed the Inuit children. Geo Swan (talk) 08:10, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Keep - My keep is probably implied, but I will explicitly state that I, the uploader, favor keeping this image, for the reasons I stated above.
Since I noticed this nomination I cropped the File:Aylwin Lo, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503) (cropped).jpg, File:Pearl Chen, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503).jpg, File:Patrick Naval, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503).jpg, File:Jacqueline Nuwame, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503).jpg, File:Leonardo Dell'Anno, of the CFC Media Lab, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503).jpg, File:Andrea Mallozzi, a CFC Media Lab alumnus, at a CFC event at the Bata shoe museum, in 2011 (6210871503).jpg. This is an example of the curation I described to nominator, above. I spent close to two hours on that, cropping the images, repeating my original research on the individuals, and creating wikidata entries for them.
Curation represents significant work. Geo Swan (talk) 09:11, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the clarification @Geo Swan To be honest, I wasn't entirely sure how the processes at Wikimedia Commons worked, so I really appreciate your help. I'm reaching out to request consideration for the deletion of the image due to my personal privacy concerns. However, I understand that this is merely a request and I respect the community's decision-making process. I also didn't realize how much effort had been put into curating the file.
Thank you for your time and consideration. [[Special:Contributions/North6318 (talk) 00:09, 14 May 2024 (UTC)|North6318 (talk) 00:09, 14 May 2024 (UTC)]] 01:19, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are welcome.
  1. Your next step, IMO, would be to write to the confidential committee, permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, and ask them to confirm you are one of the people in the photograph.
  2. Upload your favorite selfie, releasing it under what we consider a "free" license.
  • Could you clarify what you mean by "personal privacy concerns"?
  • What legal obligations do organizations like the Canadian Film Centre have to respect the privacy of people who accept invitations to the events they organize? Legally, I don't know, because I am not a lawyer, and the law can be highly counter-intuitive. My suspicion is that they have no legal obligation to honor attendees privacy concerns, so long as there was a note in the invite, or at the door, reminding attendees that official photographers would be circulating...
  • What moral obligations do organizations like the Canadian Film Centre have to respect the privacy of people who attend their events? If I were the CFC, I would have a pile of stickers, at the door, next to the name tags, that had one of those circles with a diagonal stripe through it, on top of a camera, and said something like, "I would like to opt out of having my picture taken at this event".
I'd have my official photographers try to avoid including individuals wearing this tag in group photos.
I'd have the photographers go through their photos, prior to printing them, looking to see if they ended up including people wearing the opt-out sticker, in spite of their best efforts. If that individual can be cropped out, or if there is an alternate photo, without them, Great.
But, ultimately, I'd let it be the responsibility of the opt-out person to keep an eye out for photographers. Geo Swan (talk) 21:51, 11 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
More time

This edit looks like the nominator took the time to create their own wiki-ID. I think this could be because they are going to write to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, and then make a more detailed request.

So, I suggest we keep this DR open for at least an extra week, to give them a chance to do that.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 08:15, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I shot those pictures in that street in Greece. In 2004 most digital cameras produced pictures that looked like this 😅. I bought that Kyocera SL300R in 2004 but it was released in 2003. It was a great camera in terms of FPS but not in terms of resolution. Also, it was average for subjects exposed to direct sun light but anything in shadows came out very grainy/noisy. Cohen's media[edit]

Most of those uploaded in Category:Evidence presented in New York (criminal) trial of Donald Trump (and subcats) are not in the public domain, even though entered into the court docket. The WSJ and National Enquirer screenshots are copyrighted. The private correspondences between people are, presumably, copyrighted too. Contracts and legal documents, wordy, are also presumably copyrighted. Unless Cohen has released the audio recordings he made, they are protected by copyright (as with, I believe, the transcripts). There's one photo of Cohen that has an unknown author.

Some emails/texts, marked by (?), are so short I am unsure of their existence here being a copyright infringement. I am not sure about them and would like input. Please let me know of any mistakes in this large request. SWinxy (talk) 05:50, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That's a pity. I apologize for the mistake, there was no intention of breaking the copyright laws of the US. It's a beautiful scene, though.
--Mojnsen (talk) 12:20, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mojnsen that's OK. In fact, in real life there was a more serious case, involving US Postal Service and the now-deceased sculptor of the Korean War Veterans Memorial (Gaylord v. United States), concerning the USPS' use of a former Marine's image of the said monument in their 2003 commemorative stamps as part of the 50th anniversary of the Korean War ceasefire. All deleted images of the said monument are categorized at Category:Korean War Veterans Memorial-related deletion requests/deleted.
Your image of the Three Soldiers will be undeleted 70+1 years after the sculptor's death, provided that the U.S. law is still restrictive with regards to the right of netizens/content creators to freely use or exploit images of copyrighted public art. JWilz12345 (Talk|Contrib's.) 14:17, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps, in forty-six years the image will be restored here on Commons, when that sculpture is in the public domain. It's a good picture, and it's not being deleted forever. grendel|khan 08:58, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am a multi decade, national media professional. ALL the images I have uploaded fall into one of 3 categories. I either created it, commissioned it or secured all rights to it. In other words , I 100% have the legal right to do with the images as I please. (Though, to be clear, the images were obtained as part of a project for the area in question.) I have been dealing with image rights since before most of you were born and do not appreciate the FALSE anonymous allegations that place me in a situation where to defend the truth I would have to disclose who I am. If I have to disclose who I am, that is fine, but the FALSE nominator should disclose themselves as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Esteroinfo (talk • contribs) 16:46, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I am not an expert on uploading images to wikipedia and even now do not exactly recall how we got all the images up, except that it took more than a single day and several tries. I recall that I had help from several members of our wikipedia group at the club house but none of us had ever uploaded images to the site before, so we were figuring it out together. Whether all or a portion of the images went up using my account, some other members account, while login in or not logged in, while in the club house, at my home, the library or Starbucks, if the process of uploading each image inadvertently created a new account each time, or any combination of the proceeding, I have absolutely no idea. If I had to upload images right now I am certain I would once gain run into all sorts of issues. If anything about the way the images were finally uploaded broke some secret unwritten rule than that is because we are new to this stuff and are not technologically proficient in the ways of the website. That is it, nothing more nefarious than that. Wikipedia is for everyone to use and for everyone to contribute to. I should not, and do not, have to defend my contributions against anonymous FALSE assertions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Esteroinfo (talk • contribs) 21:05, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, it does have to be 'defended'. I would think that as "a multi decade, national media professional" you would value Wikipedia's practice of rigorously protecting the copyright holder's rights. As a professional, would you want me to be able to upload any picture you've taken and simply say "it's mine" without any evidence of that? Especially when the images have been used commercially. You have admitted that some of the images are ones you "secured all rights" to. That, in and of itself, requires some "defending". You uploaded the images under a different account. Either it is your account or the person who uploaded them essentially lied on the licensing. Log into YOUR account to start verifying that you are the uploader. Also, read the CC licensing you agreed to. Weren't some of these images part of commercial jobs? Stop being indignant and start supporting the claim. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Esteroinfo (talk • contribs) 16:52, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Esteroinfo (talk) 21:10, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, your whole 'before you were born' line gives me a laugh. Niteshift36 (talk) 12:40, 10 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the explanation - then, my opinion is still keep because (1) adding a watermark without creativity does not create new copyright, (2) the uploaded image does not contain the watermark at all. ネイ (talk) 15:36, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I maintain that such a limitation violates the law of the European Commission, and is therefore not applicable, because of the rationale I laid out in Commons:Deletion requests/Template:EC-Audiovisual Center (which, I will note, was accepted by the closer). I will add that that same copyright page, after the aforementioned discussion occured, has been updated to state that "The audiovisual material (still images, moving images and sound sequences) owned by the EU and made available on the website of the Audiovisual Service of the European Commission is subject to the Commission’s reuse policy, set out by the Commission Decision of 12 December 2011 on the reuse of Commission documents," which explicitly prohibits the limitations mentioned above. That picture has a watermark and a statement "copyright not evaluated". So IMHO not suitable. The Banner (talk) 18:54, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Keep A higher quality version of the image is available here: https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/assets/c98020f9-7890-4a79-9fed-39095894991d/0/12?lang=eng The reverse of the card -- https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/assets/c98020f9-7890-4a79-9fed-39095894991d/0/13?lang=eng -- makes it clear the images were published in the 1860s. (The card's publisher, Savage & Ottinger, was dissolved in 1870.) The higher quality version of the image should be used and the information updated. —Tcr25 (talk) 19:18, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So a new picture to be uploaded, with corrected licenses and a corrected name? The Banner (talk) 21:00, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The current image could be retained (with improved information), but a better quality version exists so I would think we'd rather have that. It could overwrite this file or be uploaded separately and this one then gets deleted as a lower quality duplicate. —Tcr25 (talk) 23:12, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Due to questionable sourcing, a new upload would be the best option. The Banner (talk) 09:45, 9 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Work of the Government of Canada, published in 2016. Document is not over 50 years, still under Crown Copyright - not yet Public Domain. Will expire January 1, 2067. One could make the argument it is PD-text but it includes some graphics, crest and such that would go beyond COM:TOO. PascalHD (talk) 16:15, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The person with the red lanyard is out of focus though. I can't make them out at the actual resolution. Robertsky (talk) 18:07, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
IMHO they’re recognizable enough – I don’t remember their name, but I feel confident I’d be able to pick them out if I was back at the hackathon. I recognize the person to the left of them, who’s about equally blurry, as Subbu Sastry. (But some more blur could be enough to make the photo acceptable, if you want to keep the photo of the person in focus.) Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:19, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have uploaded a couple of versions with increasing blurriness to the participant in question. Robertsky (talk) 18:37, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I think I’m okay with both of those (though I’d prefer only “more blur” staying). Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 18:38, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The same photo can be found (indirectly) on the official website of the National Library of Ireland here. They date the image to 1911. They are unable to attribute a photographer to the image.
If an academic authority as high as the NLI cannot identify a photographer, I think it's reasonable to assume it was published anonymously. NLI notes the version they have was amongst photographs found in the collection of Arthur Griffith. CeltBrowne (talk) 21:33, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hackathon participant with red “no photo” lanyard is visible on the table behind and to the right of the “main” one (between me in the teal/pink shirt and Mahir with the face mask); two or three more red lanyards (I think) at the right edge. COM:PEOPLE#House rules applies. Could probably be solved with a judicious blur / crop and deleting the original version. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 19:36, 8 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

With Wikimedia Hackathon 2024-28-.jpg, that face is not identifiable. So I see no problem there. Kruusamägi (talk) 19:38, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can easily recognize the person, and the red lanyard is clearly visible even if you ignore the face. I maintain that this must be addressed. Lucas Werkmeister (talk) 22:54, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

File:Borduria-shield.PNG[edit]

This was included in a deletion request by User:PseudoSkull in 2023 but without adding the DR template to the file, and not addressed by the closing admin User:Ellywa who deleted the Syldavia flags. This case is different from the Syldavia flag, as this purported "Bordurian symbol" apparently wasn't designed by Hergé for the Tintin comics but is the uploader's own invention as "a possible Bordurian symbol based on the Nazi German Eagle", per the file's description. As I commented in the previous deletion discussion, I think that it is therefore misleading, not educationally useful and out of scope. This particular file is not in use in any Wikimedia project at the time of nomination. Unfortunately, there's also an SVG version File:Borduria-shield.svg which is in use in three projects and which we therefore, if we apply COM:INUSE strictly, can't delete. It's an example of the dangers of such inventions, however, if we look at es:El cetro de Ottokar and tr:Bordurya, where the symbol is unquestioningly used as if it were part of Hergé's work; as if it were appearing in King Ottokar's Sceptre, which it is not. The third use is in a German Wikinews article where it's used as an example of a "not Nazi, but Nazi-like symbol", so this seems like a legitimate use - maybe we could remove the file from the Spanish and Turkish articles where it's mistakenly used, and rename it to something like "fictional Nazi-like symbol" for uses such as in Wikinews, to avoid confusion in the future...?
