Institution (Salem State University) has acquired a vast collection of photos, and has assessed/ published them under this license. We tend to trust such institutions to be deliberate in which licenses they release photographs under and informed when doing so.
Photographers are not always exclusive in their work, and as a Salem resident for part of his life, it figures that Patriquin did some work for The Salem News whose collection now belongs to the University.

@Ooligan How about you create a central conversation rather than individually nominating images from the same collection for the same rationale? This is getting really tedious.

@Ooligan If you would please read the aforementioned, I suggested in absence of clear reason for doubt, we should take the reputable institution's assessment of the image's licensing as that evidence. They placed it under a free-to-use commons license, which we should take to mean they assessed themselves as holding the right to publish it under such. @Ooligan Warren Patriquin was the photographer, but he presumably never held ownership of this or many of his works, as he was long a commissioned staff photographer for various news outlets. News outlets tend take ownership of photographs captured on their dime. So it seems odd you want to see permission from someone who likely would never had held ownership in the first place. I suggest that this file be deleted because: the media is a screenshot, and thus the rights to this image have likely not been attained through proper channels. Also, the image has a mouse cursor in the lower right corner, which not only proves the image to be a screenshot, but also compromises the image itself. This is a low quality image, whose file name also has a typo (the file name is "omis" when it should be "omnis").     I find Commons making it very easy to host and fabricate hoaxes most unfortunate (e.g. uploading fictitious flags and adding them to a sparsely populated place where no one will see/check.) The uploader gives this reason about why they consider this painting is in the public domain: "The Painting is dated around the Time Selassie was granted the order of the garter which was in 1954, likewise this work seems to be painted by Edward Copnall during that ceremony, and under UK law anything created before 1957 is in the Public domain according to "Copyright Act 1956"." However, they give the PD-Art (PD-old-70) license tag, when the author in fact died less than 70 years ago, in 1973. The expiration per the Copyright Act 1956 seems to be similar to the first clause of the PD-UKGov license tag (with the difference that the cited clause applies only for photographs), however, there is no evidence this painting was created under a commission of the British Government, so it looks like the standard term applies here (70 years from the author's death). There is no specific license, but under "Copyright Act 1956" which applies to civilians, citizens, works published or made before 1957 are in the public domain, further more the "Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988" (The following works are exempted from copyright by the transitional provisions of Schedule 1:
artistic works made before 1 June 1957) ~ Which this painting falls at. So i believe due to this law clause, the painting should stay, as PD old is the most suitable license CtasACT (talk) 03:10, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If the map is owned by MWDOC, then the uploader has falsely claimed "own work" on their upload, and they should have marked the source as WMDOC.
If uploader Tbaca is a MWDOC representative, "own work" still means that their employer claims to have made all components of the image themselves: Launched their own satellite for the photo; dived themselves to gather the bathymetric data off the coast; acquired the street data and labels; then finally combined all the components in their own GIS. If the uploader really did all this legwork themselves before they added the two WMDOC content layers, then this whole operation of data gathering and combination should get described under the "source" descriptor.
Regardless: eh, this is pretty much obviously GEarth or GMaps with two KML layers from WMDOC slapped on top. The top-layers are non-controversial, the underlying Google's property is.
